NPI number for behavior technicians
Registered Behavior Technicians are the largest group of new NPI holders in the country, and most of them learn the letters NPI from an ABA agency's onboarding checklist. Medicaid programs, commercial plans and TRICARE increasingly require the technician's own NPI on every claim as the rendering provider, so agencies ask for it before the first billable session.
Who asks behavior technicians for an NPI
- ABA agencies at hire
- The onboarding checklist asks for the NPI alongside the RBT certification and background check, because the payer roster needs it before you can be scheduled on a billable caseload.
- State Medicaid programs
- Florida and Indiana Medicaid, among others, enroll behavior technicians individually as rendering providers, which takes a Type 1 NPI.
- Commercial behavioral health plans
- Optum and other plans require the rendering provider's NPI and taxonomy on ABA claims; a group NPI in that slot is rejected.
- TRICARE Autism Care Demonstration
- Every ABA provider under the demonstration, including technicians, must hold an NPI.
When you can skip it
A technician whose agency never bills a payer under the technician's name does not need one yet, but that is rare now. The NPI is free, lasts for life and moves with you from agency to agency, so most technicians get it with the certification.
Taxonomy code for a behavior technician
The taxonomy code tells CMS and every payer your profession. For most behavior technicians it is 106S00000X, Behavior Technician. SimpleNPI enters it for you from your license type.
Your license on the application
RBT is a certification from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, not a state license. On the application, choose Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) as the license type and enter your BACB certification number as the license number, with the state where you work. A few states also license or register behavior technicians; enter that number if you have one.
Before you are licensed
A trainee who has finished the 40-hour course but not yet passed the RBT exam can still get an NPI; CMS does not check the certification. Most agencies prefer to see the certification first, because the credential goes on the payer roster next to the NPI.
Two free ways to get it
SimpleNPI files it for you
- One short form: name, license, contact, address, identity and an e-signed authorization. About 3 minutes, no CMS account to create.
- A person checks your license and address, then files the application with CMS under your signed authorization.
- Your NPI arrives by email and text, with all the documentation, usually within 10 minutes. Filed after midnight Eastern? It issues around 6 am Eastern.
Usually within 10 minutes after the form is complete.
