NPI number for counselors
Counselors need an NPI the moment they bill insurance, join a panel, or sign up with a platform like Headway, Alma, Grow Therapy, Rula or SonderMind. Every one of those onboarding forms starts with the same field: NPI.
Who asks counselors for an NPI
- Insurance panels and clearinghouses
- Every claim, every CAQH profile and every payer enrollment is keyed to your individual NPI.
- Group practices and telehealth platforms
- Headway, Alma, Grow Therapy, Rula, SonderMind and similar platforms ask for the NPI before they can credential you with their payers.
- Medicaid and the VA
- State Medicaid enrollment and VA Community Care credentialing both begin with the NPI.
- Supervisors and agencies
- Agencies that bill for associate-level clinicians usually have each associate get an individual NPI so the rendering provider is on the claim.
When you can skip it
A private-pay practice that never bills a payer and never writes superbills can skip it, but almost every counselor ends up needing one within a year or two of licensure.
Taxonomy code for a mental health counselor
The taxonomy code tells CMS and every payer your profession. For most counselors it is 101YM0800X, Mental Health Counselor. SimpleNPI enters it for you from your license type.
| Also used | NUCC name | When |
|---|---|---|
101YP2500X | Professional Counselor | Counselor, Professional: an alternative some LPCs choose; payers accept either. |
101YA0400X | Addiction (Substance Use Disorder) Counselor | Counselor, Addiction (Substance Use Disorder): for LADC, CADC and similar addiction licenses. |
101Y00000X | Counselor | Counselor (no specialization): a general code, less specific than Mental Health. |
101YS0200X | School Counselor | Counselor, School: for school counselors. |
Your license on the application
The application asks for your license number and the issuing state. Enter the full number exactly as your state board lists it, including any prefix. Associate and provisional license numbers work the same way.
Before you are licensed
Associate and provisional licensees (LPC-Associate, ACMHC, LAC, LPCC-A, LGPC and similar) can and usually should get an NPI. Use the same Mental Health Counselor taxonomy; there is no separate associate code. Students in a program can use the Student taxonomy (390200000X) and change it later.
Two free ways to get it
