NPI number for social workers

Clinical social workers have billed Medicare since 1990, and every panel, platform and Medicaid program asks for the NPI first. Non-clinical social workers get one too, under the general Social Worker code.

Short answer: social workers need an NPI when a payer, platform or employer puts them on a claim. The NPI is free, takes minutes, and lasts for life. SimpleNPI files it for you for free, usually within 10 minutes, or you can apply yourself at NPPES. Check the free lookup first in case you already have one.

Who asks social workers for an NPI

Medicare and Medicaid
LCSWs enroll in Medicare through PECOS; the NPI is the first field.
Commercial panels and platforms
Headway, Alma, Rula, Grow Therapy, SonderMind and payer credentialing all key on the NPI.
Hospitals, agencies and group practices
Your individual NPI goes on the claim as the rendering provider even when the agency bills.
VA Community Care
TriWest and Optum credential by NPI.

When you can skip it

Social workers in roles that never touch a claim (case management at a non-billing agency, policy work) can skip it, though many employers ask for it anyway.
