NPI number for behavior analysts

Behavior analysts bill Medicaid, commercial plans and TRICARE under their own NPI and supervise technicians who need one too. Most states now license behavior analysts, and payers want the license number and the NPI together on the credentialing file.

Short answer: behavior analysts need an NPI when a payer, platform or employer puts them on a claim. The NPI is free, takes minutes, and lasts for life. SimpleNPI files it for you for free, usually within 10 minutes, or you can apply yourself at NPPES. Check the free lookup first in case you already have one.

Who asks behavior analysts for an NPI

Medicaid and commercial payers
ABA claims list the behavior analyst as the rendering or supervising provider by NPI, and payer credentialing starts with it.
ABA agencies and group practices
The agency bills under its Type 2 NPI and lists each analyst's individual NPI on the claim and the roster.
TRICARE Autism Care Demonstration
Every ABA provider under the demonstration must hold an NPI.
CAQH and payer enrollment
A CAQH profile cannot be created without an NPI, and most commercial panels credential through CAQH.

When you can skip it

A behavior analyst who works only in schools or research and never appears on a health claim may not need one, but the NPI is free and lasts for life, so most get it at certification.

Taxonomy code for a behavior analyst

The taxonomy code tells CMS and every payer your profession. For most behavior analysts it is 103K00000X, Behavior Analyst. SimpleNPI enters it for you from your license type.

Questions behavior analysts ask

What is the taxonomy code for a BCBA?
103K00000X, Behavior Analyst. BCaBA certificants use 106E00000X, Assistant Behavior Analyst, and technicians use 106S00000X.
Do my RBTs need their own NPI?
In most payer programs now, yes: the technician is the rendering provider on the claim. Agencies usually make it part of onboarding; SimpleNPI has a page for ABA agencies that handles it from one link.
Do I need a Type 2 NPI for my ABA practice?
Only if the practice bills payers under its own name and tax ID. A solo analyst billing as an individual needs only the Type 1.
Does my NPI change when I get licensed in a new state?
No. Update the license and taxonomy in NPPES; the number stays the same.
