NPI vs CAQH vs PECOS: what is each one for?
NPI
Free, from CMS through NPPES, once per lifetime. Identifies you on every claim. Get it the day you are licensed, or earlier as a student. SimpleNPI files it for free.
CAQH ProView
A free online profile where you enter education, licenses, insurance, work history and references once; participating health plans pull it when you apply to their networks. You need the NPI to create the profile. Most commercial panels and platforms like Headway and Alma use it.
PECOS
Medicare's Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System. Enrolling lets you bill Medicare or order and refer for Medicare patients. It asks for the NPI first and links the enrollment to it. Medicaid enrollment is separate and runs through each state.
The order
NPI, then state Medicaid and PECOS if you want those programs, then CAQH and the individual commercial panels. Credentialing with a panel typically takes 60 to 120 days after the application is complete, which is why the NPI should not be the thing you are waiting on.
