Is my NPI number public?
What anyone can see
Name, credential, NPI, entity type, primary and other taxonomies, license numbers and states, practice location and mailing address, phone and fax, enumeration date and last update. Search it with the free NPI lookup. Payers, employers and patients use it to verify providers.
What stays private
Social Security number, date of birth, birth state or country, sex, and the contact person's details. CMS uses them to match your identity and never releases them. SimpleNPI encrypts them, uses them once to file, and deletes them once the application is filed.
Using a home address
Many solo providers use their home as the practice location, which makes it public. If that is a concern, use a professional address or a registered agent address for the practice location. The mailing address can be a PO box.
