NPI number for registered nurses

Most staff RNs never need an NPI. Nurses who do are the ones whose name appears on a claim or order: home health and hospice case managers, infusion and aesthetic nurses who bill, school nurses in Medicaid billing programs, and anyone planning to become an NP.

Short answer: registered nurses need an NPI when a payer, platform or employer puts them on a claim. The NPI is free, takes minutes, and lasts for life. SimpleNPI files it for you for free, usually within 10 minutes, or you can apply yourself at NPPES. Check the free lookup first in case you already have one.

Who asks registered nurses for an NPI

Home health, hospice and Medicaid programs
Some state Medicaid programs and agencies list the RN as the rendering or ordering provider.
Aesthetic, infusion and independent nursing practices
A nurse who bills a payer or writes superbills needs the NPI on them.
Employers
Some hospitals and staffing agencies ask every clinician for an NPI for credentialing files.
Future NP enrollment
Getting the NPI as an RN means only a taxonomy change later, not a new application.

When you can skip it

Staff nurses whose employer bills everything under facility and physician NPIs do not need one. It is free and permanent, so getting one early does no harm.

Taxonomy code for a registered nurse
