NPI number for massage therapists
Most massage therapists never hear the letters NPI until a payer asks for one. The National Provider Identifier is the 10-digit number that goes on every health claim, and the VA, auto insurers, workers' compensation carriers and on-demand platforms all ask for it before they will pay for massage.
Who asks massage therapists for an NPI
- VA Community Care
- TriWest and Optum credential massage therapists by NPI before veterans can be referred to you under a VA community care referral.
- Auto injury and workers' compensation claims
- In states where massage is covered after an accident or work injury under a prescription, the claim lists your Type 1 NPI as the treating provider.
- Health plans and HSA superbills
- A superbill a client submits to a health plan, HSA or FSA administrator usually needs the provider's NPI on it.
- Clinics and group practices
- A clinic billing under its own Type 2 NPI still lists each therapist's individual NPI as the rendering provider on the claim.
- On-demand and corporate wellness platforms
- Platforms that bill insurance or the VA on your behalf, such as Zeel's VA program, ask for the NPI during onboarding.
When you can skip it
A cash-only practice that never bills a payer and never writes superbills does not need an NPI. It is free and lasts for life, so many therapists get one anyway so it is ready the day an opportunity shows up.
Taxonomy code for a massage therapist
The taxonomy code tells CMS and every payer your profession. For most massage therapists it is 225700000X, Massage Therapist. SimpleNPI enters it for you from your license type.
Your license on the application
The application asks for your massage license number and the state that issued it, entered exactly as your state board lists it. Massage is licensed in most states; if yours has no statewide license, a person at SimpleNPI reviews the application before filing.
Before you are licensed
A student in a massage program can get an NPI under the Student taxonomy (390200000X) and switch it to Massage Therapist once licensed. Most therapists simply wait for the license, because the license number is what payers want to see next to the NPI.
Two free ways to get it
SimpleNPI files it for you
- One short form: name, license, contact, address, identity and an e-signed authorization. About 3 minutes, no CMS account to create.
- A person checks your license and address, then files the application with CMS under your signed authorization.
- Your NPI arrives by email and text, with all the documentation, usually within 10 minutes. Filed after midnight Eastern? It issues around 6 am Eastern.
Usually within 10 minutes after the form is complete.
